Have you heard of York priest Father Tim Jones? No?

Well he's hit the national headlines by suggesting that its OK (in certain circumstances) to shoplift. In fact he sayst that its better to shoplift than to turn to other dubious sources of income such as prostitution or burglary.

Father Tim's comments have landed him in the papers, on the couch of the BBC breakfast and in hot water with his employers. His xmas message has not been well received by retailers unsurprisingly, some of whom who labelled the liberal priest as "one psalm short of a sermon". Hilarious. Anyway whilst his main point has been (deliberately) missed - the plight of the socially shafted - he has succeeded in drawing sufficient publicity to spark a discussion.

His employers should consider promoting him (to marketing or pr?) rather than binning him. He has got people emoting on a seasonally pertinent subject which is somewhere in his job description I'm almost certain.

And besides it is Christmas after all. Right I'm off to Marks to nick some mince pies.

See him in the news: http://www.google.co.uk/search?cf=all&hl=en&q=father+tim+jones
